FAQ

Common questions

What exactly is XAU/USD and how is one lot defined?

XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold quoted in US dollars. One standard lot is 100 oz, so a 1.00-lot position tracks 100 ounces and one pip, which is 0.01 on this pair, is worth $1 per standard lot. Your naira exposure moves with the USD/NGN rate as well.

What moves the gold price during a normal week?

Gold responds mainly to US dollar strength, real interest rate expectations, inflation data and demand for safe assets during geopolitical stress. Central bank buying and physical demand also matter. None of these give a reliable short-term direction, which is why position sizing matters more than prediction.

When is gold most liquid for someone trading from Nigeria?

Liquidity is highest when the London and New York sessions overlap, which falls in the Nigerian afternoon and evening. The Asian session is quieter. Spreads and slippage tend to widen outside those active hours, so a stop placed in a thin market may fill further away than you planned.

Why does the gold price on this site differ from my broker's quote?

Because a broker quote is a tradeable bid and ask that includes its own markup, while a reference price is a mid-market figure. Feeds also update at slightly different moments and your platform may add a spread. A small gap is normal and is not evidence of a bad fill.

Is gold a good hedge against naira weakness?

Gold is priced in dollars, so a naira decline does tend to lift the naira value of a dollar gold position, but that is not a guarantee and it cuts both ways. Gold itself can fall in dollar terms at the same time. Anyone treating it as a sure hedge is ignoring the risk of loss.
